Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are treatable mental health conditions that involve preoccupation with food,  weight, and body. They often come with emotional pain, anxiety,  shame or past trauma. They include anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder, are the most prominent.

Anorexia is  severe food restriction, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. Individuals with anorexia often appear high-functioning, making the disorder harder to detect.

Bulimia involves episodes of binge eating followed by efforts to compensate—such as vomiting, fasting, or excessive exercise. People with bulimia feel trapped in a painful cycle of guilt and secrecy. Over time, the disorder can cause issues like digestive problems, electrolyte imbalances, cognitive impairment and dental damage.

Binge-eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the U.S. It involves recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food quickly, often in secret, and feeling out of control or distressed afterward.
